Here's a great suggestion from Eugene Peterson in the forward to his book, Take and Read:
"Can I suggest a goal? Goal setting is, for the most part, bad spirituality. But there can be exceptions. I think this might qualify as an exception: over the next five years, develop your own list of spiritual friends [he's referring to helpful authors]... Develop your own list, which over the years will become not a 'list' at all, but a room full of friends with whom you have 'sweet converse.'"
I like Peterson's suggestion. Who are the writers who best help you encounter God and become more like Him? Those are true friends, and God has brought them to you for His purpose. List them. Seek out their writings, biographies, etc. Cultivate their acquaintance and let the Holy Spirit teach you through them.
And anticipate the day when you will meet them face to face and enjoy "sweet converse" for eternity!
